operation. The remaining two rats were unoperated controls. In the second experiment, 96 rats were grouped, 3 days after arrival, so that each cage contained rats of sizes ranging from the smallest to the largest found in the entire lot. Half of the rats in each cage were then implanted with the tumor as before, and the other half were sham-operated to serve as controls for the rats in the adjacent cage with which they were paired. Injection of iodide.—Each of the 148 rats received only a single injection. This consisted of 0.8 ml. per 100 grams of body weight of the radioactive sodium iodide solutions described below. It was given sub cutaneously in the dorsal flank. After injection each rat was kept separately. In the first experiment, on 52 rats, injections were begun 7 days after tumor implanta tion and were carried out over a period of a week (Table I). In the second experiment, on 96 rats, injections were made at 5, 6, 11, 12, 15,and 16 days aftertumor implantation. On the sixteenth day, the injection was divided between the dorsal flanks of each rat to avoid external leakage from the needle puncture which may

Radioactive iodine and radioactive cesium: two important radio-hazard elements in post nuclear power plant crisis
The present nuclear leakage crisis from Japan is a topic to be discussed in present public health. In radiology, the leaked radioactive elements are considered hazard. Here, the author briefly reviews and discusses on two important radio-hazard elements in post nuclear power plant crisis, radioactive iodine and radioactive cesium. Based on previous similar nuclear crisis in Russia, it ...

Finding accurate methods to be employed for the treatment of esophageal cancers is of especial interest for researchers, due to the sensitivity of this tissue. Recently radioactive stents loaded with I-125 brachytherapy seeds have been widely investigated for the treatment of advanced esophageal cancer. It is necessary to investigate the dose distribution of any radioactive esophageal stents be...
متن کاملAn Unusual Case Report: Occurrence of Renal Cell Carcinoma, Basal Cell Carcinoma and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia in a Case of Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Treated with Radioactive Iodine
The standard therapy for thyroid cancer is total or near total thyroidectomy, followed by the administration of radioactive iodine for remnant ablation or residual disease. Patients with radioiodine therapy are predisposed to second malignant neoplasms in organs such as central nervous system (CNS), breast, prostate, kidney, bone marrow, salivary gland, and digestive tract. Exposure to carcinog...

Aflatoxins are toxins which are usually produced by a kind of Aspergillus fungus named Flavus, Parasiticus, and Numius. There are 18 kinds of Aflatoxins have been discovered by scientists and Aflatoxin B1 is the most toxic and carcinogenic. Taking aflatoxins present in food causes lots of diseases like liver diseases, alcoholic liver, mutagenesis, and malformation in animals. It also has some o...

BACKGROUND Ablative radioiodine-131 ((131)I) therapy is used in the standart treatment procedure of thyroid carcinoma and procedures using (131)I represent the majority of Nuclear Medicine therapeutic procedures. The principal route of (131)I excretion after the administration of (131)I is the urine. Amifostine is an organic thiophosphate ester prodrug and the kidney concentrations of the activ...
